BACKGROUND

The 1961 Education Act made provision for private individuals to establish schools with permission from the ministry of Education, in order to supplement Government effort. Even before the days of Governor Guggisberg, Education had been provided by private organisations and individuals like the Missionaries and Colonia Castle Officials. These were later followed by British trained Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean Scholars, who spread over West Africa in the early 1920's. Hence, most of the present public schools were private schools to start with. Private schools in those days could be counted at finger tips.

After Independence, Government placed more emphasis on the fact that children could turned into better citizens and more efficient workers if they could read and write than if they could not. Education was recognised as an instrument for increasing National productivity and output, hence Govenment passed a law making it compulsory for all children of school going age to be in school.

This law, immediately placed on Government the Heaviest burden of all its commitments-to provide buildings, furniture, the necessary facilities, trained teachers, administrative personnel, staff accomodation, transportation, salaries and other benefits for all categories of school staff. These education facilities were to be provided by Government in every single city, town, village and hamlet in every part of the country. In every human circumstance, this was an impossible task for the Government.

Thus, in the Educational Act of 1961, Government provided a section which made it possible for individual citizens and organizations, to privately open and run schools, to be supervised by the Ministry of Education, to supplement Government effort.

This opened the way for the flow of private provision of funds, infrastructure, and other facilities to appropriately augment Government effort. The early crop of private schools sprang up after 1961, and were mostly located in urban capitals side by side with public schools. In every developed and developing sub-urban and rural areas where there were no, public schools, the private schools continue to provide for teaching, learning and training.

OUR MISSION

1. Our first responsibility is to partner the Government of Ghana to provide Educational structures, and to carry for government part of the burden of Education management and funding. That every Private School in Ghana shall become a member of the GNAPS, so that with a united front we shall support government, and make National Education Management a less difficult job.
2. Our objective is to enhance children's quality of learning through the effective and efficient delivery of the curriculum.
3. We believe that an important responsibility is to our children, staff and parents, to meet their needs and provide outstanding service.
4. We will provide a range of Education and Social experiences appropriate to the age, ability, and needs of our pupils.
5. We will have consistently, high expectations and match these with serious supervision, high quality resources and learning strategies.
6. We are committed to honesty and responsibility in all relationships, respecting the rights of individuals and stressing the importance of social awareness and sensitivity.
7. We will create opportunities for every individual in the school community to develop his/ her maximum potential.
8. We will manage resources to ensure maximum Education benefit.
9. We will create and sustain a proffessional learning environment, and always deliver quality Education.
10. We will pursue a philosophy of continious improvement of every aspect of schol work and life - our Schools shall always be centres of Excellence.
11. We will always uphold gender equity and equal rights for all Ghanaian children. We shall at all times welcome into our fold, International NGO's to support us in diverse ways
